What is Meta-NLP?

Meta-NLP is simply the teaching of NLP and Neuro-Semantics.
Neuro-Semantics is a complete field that synthesizes knowledge of NLP, cognitive and behavioural sciences, general semantics, neuroscience, linguistics and systemics.
To understand more clearly, here is a historic recap and a reminder of key definitions.

The Origins of Neuro-Semantics

Neuro-Semantics (NS) is born out of the work of American researcher Michael Hall, Ph.D. (doctor in psychology), who in 1994, as a teacher and passionate researcher of NLP and General Semantics, used the self-reflexive nature of conscience to model states.

That is how he discovered how the highest levels of consciousness functioned. It is he, who gave birth to the Meta-States Model, the heart of Neuro-Semantics.

The Meta-States Model describes the highest levels of consciousness that generate our way of thinking, feeling, speaking and acting. It allows one to effect rapid, efficient and durable change.

The simplicity of the model allows one to use simple and powerful techniques, making Neuro-Semantics a method accessible to all and very practical not just for coaches, consultants and therapists, but also for all those interested in their own personal development.

From this discovery of meta-states and gestalt states, and their multiple applications, Neuro-Semantics was born; a complete field that synthesizes knowledge of NLP, cognitive and behavioural sciences, general semantics, neuroscience, linguistics and systemics.

NLP / Neuro-Linguistic Programing

It is a communication model that describes the way in which we treat information and how we generate ‘mind-body’ states. By using the language of the mind, in other words, sensory-based representation systems (mainly visual, auditive and kinesthetic, or VAK) and language, we ‘think’ using the ‘see’, ‘hear’ and ‘feel’ dimensions. These modes of perception (or modalities) put us in control of our brain. As we represent data on the inner screen of our conscience, , we also give our body the signal to put us in a certain ‘mind-body’ state of conscience (a neuro-linguistic state).

NLP was developed by a computer science student and a linguist, in order to explore human excellence, and today constitutes both a model and a toolkit of techniques. NLP provides us with detailed methods to operate our brains ourselves, in order to manage our own states, to communicate more efficiently with ourselves and others, and to reproduce human expertise in all fields.

It is a self-reflexive model of conscience, which stretches the NLP model takes it to the next level. Meta-states detail with great precision the way in which we think (literally) about our thoughts and feelings, in order to generate higher levels of ‘thought emotions’ and stratification of conscience. By using thus our ‘thought emotions’, our “thoughts about our thoughts”, our “emotions about our emotions” , we create ‘mind-body’ states about these states, in other words Meta-states.

It is a meaning-building model, which is the sole preserve of humans. By using Meta-states to work on the higher levels of our states, Neuro-Semantics stretches and enlarges NLP by focusing on the conceptual frames of meaning of these higher levels. A Neuro-Semantic state is about the frames and conceptual states governing our everyday primary states. This model clearly structures the many laws at work at the meta level to operate on the way our nervous system (neurology) and our mind (linguistics) create meaning, assess events and experiences, and attribute significance (semantics). In terms of form, Neuro-Semantics bases itself on General Semantics, NLP, Meta-states and cognitive sciences, as it outlines processes to effect transformation at these higher levels. If NLP refers to the structure of our Representation, and Meta-states refers to our Reflexivity, we can say that Neuro-Semantics refers to the structure of our Referentiality.

NdT2: the term ‘inner state’ encourages the artificial dichotomy between body and mind. It is the result of a Physiology (external and internal) and of a Representation: S= P(e+i) + R
NdT3: MetaState literally means ‘Meta-State’, but we translate it more often as ‘Meta-Strategy’ . In the text, we usually use Meta-State as a noun, but sometimes also as a verb.
